In addition to my academic work, I have advised local government on how to foster civic engagement, especially for youth, and on the implementation of direct participatory procedures in Canada.
In 2019, working under the Commissioner of Community Services, I co-authored the City of Brampton's Youth Engagement Strategy, the first municipal strategy of its kind in Canada. The strategy and its recommendations were subsequently presented to Brampton City Council, and later adopted into the City's core initiatives for 2026-2030.
My primary contributions to the strategy included:
(1) The alternative framework I proposed, which emphasized adapting to the evolving needs and priorities of Brampton's youth and fostering civic participation as a means of building leadership and advisory skills while improving elected officials' understanding of the issues that directly affect young people. The strategy established a set of principles and actionable initiatives intended to empower youth to actively shape the programs, services, and policies that affect their lives, strengthen youth political representation and participation, remove barriers to employment and career development, and improve government transparency and accountability.
(2) The recommendation for the City to establish a Brampton Youth Cabinet, a participatory institution with open membership that provides local youth with opportunities to meet, lead projects, identify community priorities, and influence local government decision-making. In 2026, the Brampton Youth Cabinet was established as the City's official advisory body for residents aged 14–29, based directly on the principles and actionable initiatives set out in the original Youth Engagement Strategy.
Through advising City staff and collaborating with community-based organizations, I learned a great deal about how participatory democracy works in practice. This experience deepened my commitment to the political empowerment of diverse and underrepresented groups and continues to inform my work as a political theorist.
